Week on Week I see lads through them self at there quad/atv in the hope that it will give them a buzz when riding, most of the time these guys are getting scrapped up from the floor, dusted off and then checking the damage to there quad, each time this happens they end up forking out anywhere between £60 and £300bux for repairs or spare parts….

More and more these days, riders of all terrain vehicles (ATVs, Quads) are becoming injured or even killed when their ATV wrecks, enforcing the need for safe operating procedures. This is especially important for teenagers who are interested in riding ATVs and are less likely to practice safe conduct while operating the vehicles (You know who you are!!)…

Keep in mind that Quad/ATVs are just as dangerous as Cars, Motorcycles, Trucks, or Sport utility vehicles, so only operate them using the proper techniques and procedures. Many riders neglect the fact that these vehicles have the capability to extremely injure or KILL the drivers, but in the correct hands, Quad/ATVs can be a fun way to spend time in the great outdoors.

So Follow my 10 safety tips when riding any Quad/ATV, to get the best possible experience from your machine…

1. Only drivers over the age of 16 should operate an ATV. Alone!!

Children under the age of 16 should not operate an Quad/ATV. This is especially important, since younger children are usually injured on Quad/ATVs due to their size or inexperience with operating vehicles. Even once a child is 16 and able to operate an Quad/ATV, adult supervision should be present at all times!!!

2. Always wear protective gear!!!

Just like operating a motorcycle or bike, riding an Quad/ATV requires you use proper protective gear. ALWAYS wear a helmet. Most serious or fatal accidents occur when the rider is not wearing a helmet and falls on his or her head. Helmets may not be the most stylish accessory, but they can literally save your life. Also, since most riders operate Quad/ATVs in wooded environments, be sure to wear proper eye protection, as a rock, branch, or even a bug can fly into your eye and cause damage. Furthermore, be sure to wear boots and gloves to protect your hands and feet while operating the Quad/ATV.

3. Take a driver’s safety course.

Before you drive a car, you take a safety course, so why should driving an Quad/ATV be any different? Safety courses educate riders of the correct way to operate and ride an Quad/ATV to ensure he or she knows how to handle the vehicle. Also, safety courses will teach riders of all ages the appropriate behavior when riding an Quad/ATV, making it critical for teens and adults to attend.

4. Only one rider per vehicle.

ATVs are designed for only one rider at a time(Unless otherwise stated). Since you have to manipulate your weight in order to control the vehicle, two riders on a vehicle is incredibly dangerous! Also, the Quad/ATV may be unable to successfully hold the combined weight of two riders, making it less stable and more apt to roll over. Finally, having an additional rider can distract the driver from the task of properly operating the vehicle.

5. Ride Quads/ATVs in appropriate settings.

When it comes to where to ride your Quad/ATV, ensure you choose a proper setting (Greenock Donnies). Avoid roads and streets, since Quad/ATVs are not designed nor intended to be driven on concrete or asphalt with larger cars and trucks. Also, avoid improper terrain that may encourage the Quad/ATV to roll over due to instability in the ground.

6. Do not speed.

ATVs are designed to go a certain speed safely. Increasing the speed—especially through certain terrains—decreases your control and the vehicle’s stability, making you more prone to have an accident. Aviod larger loose rocks and the slops of hills, these can cause the ATV/Quad to flip over unexpectedly & could trap you under the machine..

7. Do not operate an Quad/ATV impaired.

Many adults find themselves tempted to operate an Quad/ATV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even over the counter or prescription medications can impair your reaction time, thinking process, and judgment, so be sure to avoid operating an ATV during this time. Just like drinking and driving, alcohol and Quad/ATV driving does not mix.

8. Carry a communication device with you at all times.

Quad/ATV riders should be sure to carry a mobile phone or walkie talkie with them at all times so that they can call for help in the event of an emergency. This is especially true if you are riding alone, which is not encouraged!!! so that someone will be able to find you if you become injured. Whenever you plan to ride your Quad/ATV, you should either have another individual with you or notify someone of where you are going and when you plan to return.

9. Do not attempt tricks or stunts while riding an Quad/ATV!!!

The most injuries on Quad/ATVs occur when the vehicles are operated improperly. Take great care in riding your Quad/ATV and be sure to avoid any tricks or stunts that will encourage an accident. Furthermore, avoid improper interaction with other individuals, whether they are on an Quad/ATV or not.

10. For God Sake Use common sense.

This final safety tip is by far the best. Your common sense can carry you a long way, especially involving your safety.
Look about you, remember your surroundings, know how far from other people/riders you are, be constantly aware of your riding area, this could just save yours or someone elses live!!

Stay Safe, Ride Safe & Enjoy your machine…

There was plenty of things happening that day.

Take a look through all the pictures, we have a few motocrossers lots of quads, the kids were up on there pitbikes, the weather was great, we had Paddy on his klf 300 doing the water crossing which he nearly got stuck,

Des on his newly re-built Suzuki LT250r quadracer, shugtech on his Tri-Z 250 rebuild and also my self on my newley rebuilt yamaha blaster 200cc, a lot of work went into all the builds.

Although the first day out on them showed all the little things that would need either re-enforced or fixed altogether, poor des, broke his sidecasing with his forward kick taken it out…

The Winter period is a great time to get your machine stripped down and work out all the kinks, fix those broken or orther wise ready to break parts, in my case, it was a full strip down, Paint – service – weld – bend and build…

My Yamaha Blaster 200cc is coming along great, with British summer time just around the corner now’s the time to get it ready and back to top form,

The Blaster had a few things that needed worked out and fixed before any re-build was to take place, this is were ShugTech came in…

Blaster – Helicoil Barrell
The inlcuded picture shows ShugTech using the HeliCoil to fix my barrell were the bolt stripped all the threads, so no bolt was going to screw in, 2 mins with the helicoil and it was fixed and ready to mount the new FMF full exhaust system which i got from my fantastic wife for christmas :)

The Quads been sprayed black from its original Purple(when i bought it), the nerf bars, hubs sidecasing, kick, gear peg, and a few other bits and pieces have been sprayed “Tahiti Blue”.. which i think looks amazing, the color scheme of the quad was inspired by another i seen on blasterforums.com,

The coming summer will be one of the best, with all the quads and bikes im sure we’ll have a few days away and visit some of the other great places to ride…

Not as hard as you would think…

• YZ250 Water cooled Engine
• CR125 Race Pipe
• Nerf Bars
• Full Powder coated frame
• 10″ Back wheels
• Contra Sticker kit
• Race Cut Plastics
• YZ Radiators
• YZ Rear Shortened Silencer
• 15t front sprocket
• 39t blue Rear sprocket

Theres still plenty of work to be done, but its at the stage were its waiting for a few bits to arrive, generator coils and a few others..

this was prity much the easiest Conversion that we’ve done at shugtech’s we needed to cut roughly 3/4″ of the right inside section of the swing arm bush, then the engine just fitted in,
we cut of the existing mounts and moved them up slightly to fit the new engine mounts, a great re-weld by Shugtech,

Exhaust:
Cut the top section of the YZ downpipes and weld that onto the cr exhaust and it fitted straight in round the frame.

Sunday 27/09/09 – ShugTech getting stuck in the bog on the Quadzilla 500cc 4×4, with a little help from John on the Yamaha Grizzly 4×4, he managed to get pulled out after sinking the quad up to the rear mudguards..

Straight after that, Marty decided to try it on the blaster… and no that didn’t work out to well for him..

When the Guy that sold the quad to shug says to him “This is the Dogs Baws.” he really did mean it!
This is the Quadzillia 4×4 500cc road level version of this quad, and I have to say.. “HOLY SHIT”..
and I should know, Ive had the pleasure of having it “Roll on Top“, of me trapping me legs, but thats another story..

Small Puncture to deal with..

Sunday 9th August 2009,

The Day started of with a burst of sunshine over the track, drying up the mud from the previous few days rain, making he track a dusty nightmare to ride on, especially for the boys that wasnt wearing any goggles…

Above you can see some of the problems that the guys face each week, with lots of bodies on hand to help out and get the bike back out there.

this week had seen a few younger boys riding the course, including my very own son, Marty junior riding the 110cc pit bike, after one day of trainging using the gears on the bike, he was a natural.
